DIY - Homemade Natural Freshening Mouthwash

When it is inconvenient to brush the teeth, try to rinse your mouth with the Homemade Natural Mouthwash!
It is a simple, effective, homemade alternative to the expensive mouthwashes, and you can find all the ingredients in your kitchen:

Alcohol based Clove Extract is my main ingredient here.

Clove has specific properties that make it an ideal choice for mouthwashes and other oral treatments. Clove oral remedies are very popular now, because of its powerful antiseptic and mild anaesthetic actions. Clove contains Essential Oil that is used in treatment various skin disorders like acne, pimples etc. It is also used in severe burns, skin irritations and to reduce the sensitiveness of skin... (from wiki) And it is a beneficial component of many dental treatments.

Eugenol is a major phenolic compound in Clove EO, it acts as an antioxidant and an antimicrobial agent. Eugenol is Ethanol (Alcohol) soluble element, comprises 72-90% of the essential oil extracted from cloves, and is the compound most responsible for the cloves' aroma. Eugenol provides antiseptic and anaesthetic properties.
But! It can be toxic in relatively small quantities, be careful!

Getting Started:
I did not powder the Herbal Material, because I don't want to lose the EO in it... And I'll use Vodka as a solvent and Unground Clove as a plant material.

If you wanna do it the French way there are the details:

"The French Codex directs a tincture of cloves to be prepared by digesting for ten days, and afterwards filtering, a mixture of three ounces of powdered cloves and sixteen of 80 per cent, alcohol." From CARYOPHYLLUS – CLOVE. U.S. ( Br.) Compiled by Ivor Hughes.

For more information about the extraction of Clove please read this study of Malaysian scientists: "Temperature-dependent diffusion coefficient of soluble substances during ethanol extraction of clove " by San Myint, Wan Ramli Wan Daud , Abu Bakar Mohamad and Abdul Amir H. Kadhum (Journal of the American Oil Chemists' Society, December 12, 2006).

So the ratio is Clove 1:5 Warm Vodka (20ml:100ml), be sure to use a sterilized dark glass bottle (120 ml) for the extraction, keep it in a room temperature for 10 days, as the French Codex suggested, filter it and use it...

My recipe of Homemade Natural Freshening Mouthwash

Shelf Life:
Store this mixture in a glass bottle in the refrigerator for two-three weeks.

Please don't swallow this mouthwash. Rinse, swish, and spit it out.
This mouthwash is good for my sensitive teeth and gums.
I hope you'll enjoy this as much as I did!
