DIY - Homemade Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) Extract and Oil Infusion

Shiitake (Xiang Gu)

is the most exotic and delicious mushroom used in Asian cuisine.
You can find it in local Oriental markets or natural food stores.
I discovered its delicious taste when I used to live in China last year.

Shiitake is also the most studied medicinal mushroom of the Orient. Dried Shiitake Extract is known of its anti-cancer, anti-oxidant and antiviral properties.

Sun-drying process is breaking down Proteins into Amino Acids and transforms ergosterol to Vitamin D (sun-dried form of Shiitake has the highest content of Vitamin D of any plant food). Shiitake contains also significant quantities of the Vitamin B: Thiamine, Riboflavin, and Niacin. Lentinan, a protein-free polysaccharide, is used as an anti-cancer agent. Protein’s known as LEM has powerful anti-bacterial and immune boosting properties.*

(Nov 1997), "Immunopotentiating activity of the water-soluble lignin rich fraction prepared from LEM--the extract of the solid culture medium of Lentinus edodes mycelia.", Biosci Biotechnol Biochem 61 (11): 1909-12, doi:10.1271/bbb.61.1909, ISSN 0916-8451, PMID 9404070 (from Wiki)

Vitamin D is widely used in treatment various skin problem, like psoriasis, skin flaking and itching. It’s acting as a powerful antioxidant, preventing the premature aging of skin and damage to the skin structure.
Vitamin D is an antioxidant that is a more effective antioxidant than vitamin E in reducing lipid peroxidation and increasing enzymes that protect against oxidation.*

We will make two Shiitake Extracts:
the first one by maceration of fat-soluble Vitamin D which is essential ingredient for repairing the lipid barrier of the skin surface to keep hydration balance;

the second one by extraction of water/alcohol soluble amino acids and polysaccharides with anti-oxidant and antiviral properties.

Things We’ll Need:
We’ll need two dark glass 30ml bottles,Dried Shiitake mushrooms, Extra Vigin Olive Oil, Glycerin, Distilled Water, Vodka, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Liquid Vitamin E.
We have to sterilize the bottles by placing them in boiling water for about 15 minutes, and then washing them with alcohol and drying out with a hairdryer.

Maceration:
For fat-soluble Vitamin D extraction we will heat Extra Virgin Olive Oil to 40-50 Celsius (100-120 Fahrenheit).Instructions: Fill a dark glass bottle about halfway with a small pieces of Dried Shiitake, add an Olive Oil to cover it. Add a few drops of Vitamin E and Grapefruit Seed Extract for preservation. Leave it in dark, warm place for 4 to 6 weeks. Then filter it and keep in a dark place at room temperature.

Extraction:
For Polysaccharide compounds probably the best solvent will be warm water containing a small amount of acid. I’ve read that Alcohol is more desirable solvent for B1 and B2 forms of Vitamin B complex. So we will mix the solvent for water/vodka/glycerin soluble components in ratio 10ml of water:15ml of Glycerin:5ml of Vodka.Instructions: Fill a dark glass bottle about halfway with a small pieces of Dried Shiitake, add a Hot Water, shake well, after 15 minutes add Glycerin, shake again, and then add Vodka to cover Mushrooms. You can add a few drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract for preservation and for its acidic properties.
Leave this Extract in a dark place at room temperature for 3 weeks, and then filter it and storage in the refrigerator.. .

You can use your Shiitake Oil Infusion as a source of Vitamin D in the Oil Phase of your Skin Care Products and you can also add your Shiitake Water/Glycerin/Vodka based Extract in the Water Phase of your Products.

Good Luck :)
