DIY - Homemade Herbal Extracts: Oil Infusion/Maceration

Today we're going to be talking about Homemade Herbal Infusions in Vegetable Oil providing the therapeutic properties of both the Oil and the Herb.

The best way to enjoy the healing power of Herbs is making your own natural and organic components for your Homemade Skincare such as Herbal Extracts in Oil and Herbal Extracts in Water/Alcohol.

Herbal Extract in Oil is a vegetable oil that has been "infused" with the Fat-Soluble elements of the Herbs, while leaves or flowers are soaked in a warm Base Oil (heated to 40-60C) and then storages in a dark place for several weeks under room temperature. Some herbs are most effectively infused in Hot Oil (heated to 60-70C).



Instructions:
1. Place the base Oil (or the blend of Oils) in a double boiler, covered with a lid and heat to 40-60C .
Higher Temperature (above the 70C) can destroy the natural chemical composition of the base Oil.
2. Fill a sterilized dark glass bottle with the dried plant pieces, add a warm base Oil to cover the Herbs.
It is very important to completely cover the Herbs with the Oil, to avoid bacterial growth.
3. Label the bottle with the exact ratio of the Solvent, Ingredients and the date prepared.
4. Place the mixture in a dark place for several weeks under room temperature.
For best extraction stir the mixture from time to time. You can replace the wilted plant parts with the new ones and repeat the same procedure several times.
5. Then filter the mixture with a coffee filter to remove the plant particles.
6. Keep it in the refrigerator to prolong its shelf life.


Remember!
Be careful, You are only in control of the quality!

*Choose Herbs with the Fat-Soluble components.
*Use sterilized dark glass bottle for maceration!
*Fresh Herbs contains Water that could cause the Oil to spoilage or rancid, so be sure herbs are free of any moisture.
*Use Dried Herbs that you have picked yourself, or Organic ones from Organic Food Stores.
*Jojoba Oil is the best choice for creating Herbal Infused Oil because it has a neutral flavor and contains very little saturated fat, but it's a little too expensive.
*Extra Virgin Olive Oil is another good one, and I have to say this is my favorite Oil for Maceration, since it has a long shelf life and it is a very stable oil.Label your mixture with date and ingredients.

Best Herbs for Oil Infusion:


Calendula Oil is well-known for its ability to heal wounds and scars. The Infused Oil is created by infusing Calendula Flowers in a base Oil. I am adding it to my mixtures, but this one is not my favorite choice, I prefer the fresh Decoction of Calendula.
Carrot Oil is rich in beta carotene, Vitamins A and E and proVitamin A. Carrot Oil helps to heal dry, chapped and cracked skin, balances the moisture in skin, and it's amazing for eyes treatment. I really like it. Carrot oil is created by infusing Carrot Root in a base Oil.
Hypericum (St. Johns) Oil has amazing anti-inflammatory and healing properties. This one is a great base for healing salves. Hypericum Oil is created by infusing the Flowers in a base Oil.
Green Tea has a very powerful water-soluble polyphenolic anti-oxidants, active against lipid peroxidation and unfortunately I can't find the source of info about fat-soluble components in it, but from my experience the Green Tea Infusion is excellent for eyes treatment. Green Tea Oil is created by infusing the Leaves of Green Tea (Camellia Sinesis) in a base Oil.
Parsley Oil has antibacterial and antifungal activity. Parsley is a good natural source of vitamins and minerals. It includes: calcium, iron, carotene, ascorbic acid, and fat-soluble vitamin A. I like using it in my eyes treatment mixtures. Parsley Oil is created by infusing the Herb in a base Oil. (http://www.drugs.com/npp/parsley.html)
Echinacea Oil is effective in the prevention and/or treatment of skin damage caused by ultraviolet/ultraviolet B radiation, active against virus of Herpes. Lipo-philic fractions (fat-soluble) of the root and leaves contain the most potent immuno-stimulating components. You can create two type of Oil by infusing the Roots and Leaves of Echinacea. Shiitake Oil is known of its anti-cancer, anti-oxidant and antiviral properties. Dried form of Shiitake has the highest content of fat-soluble Vitamin D of any plant food. I am using it a lot. Shiitake Oil is created by infusing the small pieces of mushroom in a base Oil. (click here to read more)
Chamomile Oil contains a powerful anti-inflammatory azulen. This Oil has a very strong scent of fresh Chamomile Flowers, I really like it. The Infused Oil is created by infusing Chamomile Flowers in a base Oil.
Arnica Oil is helping to speed the healing process, to reduce post surgical bruising, to soothe sore muscles. Very important -MAY BE TOXIC, FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY, don't apply to open wounds. This Oil is wonderful for hematomas and to reduce under-eye circles. Arnica Oil is created by infusing Arnica Flowers in a base Oil.

Hi Galia, i make skin salves with herbally infused oils. ive been mixing all the herbs together and heating them in a double boiler. I like to use a large variety of herbs in my infusion so this limits the amount of each herb i can fit in the double boiler. so my problem is id like to make the oil more potent with each herb, so my idea is that ill infuse the oils with each herb one herb at a time, then filtering the first herb out then cooking the oil with the second herb, and so on and so forth. my question is, can oils top out on herb content so my final product will be full of properties from the first herb i cook, but weak with properties of the last herb i cook, or is this not a concern? thanks so much for your time!

What about rice oil? I am using it to clean my make up brushes (along with other things) to help replenish the oil content in the brush to avoid drying them out and prolonging their life.
